The most likely destinations for Schalke star Leon Goretzka
Premier League clubs are hot on his trail
Bundesliga club Schalke 04 are bracing themselves for a number of enquiries for their young midfield star, Leon Goretzka.
The 22-year-old is out-of-contract at the Bundesliga club in the summer. And a number of major European clubs are all reportedly interested.
The former VfL Bochum youth player has been on the radar of the elite for the last few years. But his contract issue has now put everyone on red alert.
With the January transfer window shortly upon us, the Coral News Team look at the most likely destinations for the Germany international.
Jurgen Klopp is a known admirer of Goretzka and the German link is obvious.
The Reds could be in need of a midfield overhaul.
Philippe Coutinho is likely to join Barcelona at some point and Emre Can has long been linked with Juventus. James Milner has been in and out of favour.
The Schalke ace would provide a perfect link between midfield and attack and also has an eye for goal.
One club who have been simply superb in the transfer market for a number of seasons now has been Juve.
It would surprise few to see them snap up one of the Bundesliga’s brightest talents for nothing.
The Old Lady bagging Goretzka will probably depend on whether their much-publicised courting of Emre Can pays off.
The Liverpool star is also out of contract in the summer. And if the Bianconeri don’t succeed in that pursuit, attention will swiftly turn to Goretzka.
Jose Mourinho’s need for a midfield recalibration has long been noted. The United boss has been tracking several midfield targets since the summer.
With Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera out of contract in the summer, a move for Goretzka could prove fruitful.
The club have the profile and Champions League football to offer the youngster, plus big wages to sway him.
With an ability to play across the midfield, and as a number ten, Mourinho is rumoured to be a big fan.
Due to the riches at their disposal in terms of squad depth, Bayern are probably his least likely destination.
However, that rarely stops the Bavarian giants talent-stocking and cherry-picking other German clubs for players.
At present, Bayern have Thiago Alcantara, Javi Martinez, Sebastian Rudy, and Corentin Tolisso to count on in the middle.
Goretzka would cover a number of positions in midfield, though, and that would give the squad even more flexibility.
