Nottingham best bets: Droopys Buick can Eclipse rivals
David Metcalf | 22 November 2016
Buick the bet in Eclipse cracker
The Eclipse Stakes (21:08) takes centre stage on a cracking Open-race card tonight at Nottingham screened live on Sky Sports 3, and T4 Droopys Buick is strongly fancied to come out on top in a mouth-watering clash with Bubbly Bluebird.
Jimmy Wright’s dog is a real class act and has a 50 per cent strike rate at the venue, having won four of his eight starts.
The son of Yeah Man has been the standard-setter on the clock in both rounds to date, winning by five lengths in 29.64 before powering clear in his semi-final to beat Barricane Tiger by 3 3/4 lengths in 29.52.
Judged on those times he is entitled to be clear favourite for this, despite the fact that T1 Bubbly Bluebird is a ultra-progressive youngster going places and one of the main contenders for Greyhound Of The Year.
The key will be if Buick can hold his position, or possibly lead the favourite Bluebird to the first bend as he is very strong in the second half of the race.
He has certainly shown enough early pace in this competition to do just that, and Bubbly Bluebird also has a potentially hazardous draw to overcome with two speedy types on his immediate outside.
Viking Jimmy value in Sprint
In the Sprint (19:43), T5 Viking Jimmy looks decent value at the odds on offer.
This venue has brought out the best in Jim Hayton’s dog and he is three from seven at it from the five box.
The son of Ballymac Vic comes into the contest on the back of a game success over course and distance when getting up close home to score by 1/2 a length and, if he can hold T6 Hannibal Dobbs to the bend, can turn in pole position to capitalise on possible scrimmaging on his inside and land the spoils.
Alpha Carinea holds all the aces
T5 Alpha Carinea impressed in his last visit to the track and looks the answer to the 500m Standard (20:33).
The son of Tubbertrelly Dubh had some top class form to his name in Ireland, beating the very useful Blue Cafu by a short-head and running an absolute blinder to finish a 3 3/4 length third to the brilliant Ballymac Matt in the heats of this year’s Irish Greyhound Derby.
He has made a bright start to his career in this country since joining Susan Watson, winning four of his six starts.
In the last of those over course and distance he showed bags of early pace, before staying on strongly to score by three lengths and, if clearing T6 Stay Lucky to the bend, a repeat performance looks on the cards.
Lots to like about Lucinda in Marathon
T2 Droopys Lucinda is in good form at present and rates a solid bet in the Marathon (20:51).
Gerry Ballentine’s bitch relished the step up in trip when scoring over course and distance on her penultimate outing, leading at the sixth and pulling clear to slam Atalantis Jacob by 11 3/4 lengths.
She backed that up with an excellent second to the useful Fearless Phantom over 670 at Belle Vue when missing the break before running on strongly to be closing all the way to the line to be beaten 1 1/2 lengths.
The step back up to 905m is sure to suit and Droops Lucinda can slipstream T1 Mays Rainbow in the early stages before bringing her stamina into play in the latter stages to power to glory.
