Romford best bets: Alfies Diamond a gem in Coral Essex Vase heats
David Metcalf | 25 November 2016
Alfies Diamond odds set to sparkle in opening heat of Coral Essex Vase
The first round of the Coral Essex Vase takes centre stage on an excellent 13-race Open card at Romford tonight screened live on Racing Post Greyhound TV (Sky 468, Freesat 25), and T4 Alfies Diamond rates the standout bet in the opening heat at 19:47.
Patrick Janssen’s charge opened his account over course and distance when showing bags of early pace before running on strongly to score by 1 1/3 lengths.
He has since gone on to bolt up 6 3/4 lengths at Harlow, when very quickly away, and clearly comes into the contest right at the top of his game.
The son of Doppys Scolari looks a stayer going places who needs keeping firmly onside and, with T3 Confused Eddie sure to be cutting in at the first bend, he looks nicely housed to put his early toe to good use and turn in a handy pitch before kicking in the turbo mid-race.
Swabys Millward makes plenty of appeal
Heat two (20:02) is likely to be decided by who leads at the first bend and T4 Swabys Millward has the early pace to do just that.
Paul Young’s Gold Collar and Champion Stakes finalist is a tough sort to pass when timing it right and is capable of a 13.52 sectional.
He comes into the race on the back of a cracking third to Roswell Romanov over course and distance when slowly away and getting on before running on well to be beaten three lengths, and is also five from 13 from the four box.
Swabys Millward has also finished in front of T3 Ribble Aon on two occasions in recent weeks and, with the possibility of the outside runners coming together, looks nicely housed as the sole middle seed to ping out and make all.
Thirteen Bags a tasty punt
T1 Thirteen Bags got no luck in-running on debut over course and distance and looks decent value to land heat four (20:34).
Diane Henry’s charge showed early pace before getting crowded on several occasions and in the circumstances did well to get beat just over four lengths into fourth behind Roswell Romanov.
He is entitled to improve for that sighter, and is a classy sort who ran really well when powering home to be beaten just a neck by the very smart and ill-fated California in the heats of the Puppy Derby at Henlow.
He backed that up with a strong finishing third to Clondoty Alex in the semis and packs a real strong punch at the business end of affairs.
If holding his pitch at the first bend, Thirteen Bags will to be hard to contain if within striking distance of the leaders as they turn for home.
Bubbly Torpedo can sink rivals
T4 Bubbly Torpedo looks to have a nice draw and rates a solid bet in heat five (20:50).
Trained by Paul Young, the son of Razldazl George has a tremendous strike rate at the track having won four of his seven starts.
He was particularly impressive in the last of those earlier in the month when producing a flashy 13.56 sectional to make all and slam Illseeyouagain by 4 1/2 lengths in a time of 35.50.
That just about sets the standard in this line-up and, with the possibility of some scrimmaging on the inside and the outer, a similar slick exit should be good enough to see Torpedo slip clear for another trap-to-line success.
