Romford best bets: Star to shine in Mitch Millward Memorial Marathon heats

David Metcalf | 30 November 2016

Star ready to cut a Dash at Romford

T4 Dashing Star looks decent value to land the opening heat of the Mitch Millward Memorial Marathon at 20:18 on tonight’s card at Romford screened live on Racing Post Greyhound TV (Sky 468, Freesat 250).

John Mullins’ dog is a tough and consistent performer who showed what he is capable of when making all to slam the smart Droopys Cottage by seven lengths over course and distance back in August.

He produced a rapid 24.36 sectional to win in a time of 47.13 and that sets the standard in this line up.

Dashing Star has also held his form well since that victory, winning four times, and looks nicely housed as the sole middle seed.

With the favourite T5 Romany Rouge better from the stripes, and lacking a look around the track, the selection should get acres of space on the run to the first bend and if turning in front is a tenacious sort who will be hard to peg back.

Bubby Secret a lively outsider

In heat two of the Mitch Millward Memorial Marathon (20:34), T2 Bubbly Secret looks a lively outsider and worth a wager at the odds on offer to cause an upset.

Paul Young’s bitch has only had three competitive starts, winning on the second of those over 687m at Wimbledon when railing well from the two box to lead at the second and score by 4 1/2 lengths.

The daughter of Westmead Hawk has clearly not been the easiest to train but she remains unexposed and moved well in a recent trial over course and distance.

Bubbly Secret should also have enough early pace to clear T1 Mays Rainbow and if doing so has every chance of bossing the inside.

It will then be all to play for as she is a strong running sort who will be tough to reel in if getting loose on the bunny.

Bullet a solid bet to gun down rivals

T1 Billys Bullet rates a solid bet to bet the better of main market rival T4 Slick Sebastian and land the spoils in heat three of the Mitch Millward Memorial Marathon (20:50).

The Mark Wallis trained son of Ace Hi Rumble has been a terrific servant and overcame serious injury to win the final of this year’s Coral Regency at Hove back in May.

Billys Bullet has since posted a series of solid efforts and is a tremendous competition dog who always gives his best.

He performed with great credit to get to the final of the St Leger at Wimbledon and comes into the race in good heat having overcome a slow start to win going away by 3 1/4 length over course and distance five days ago.

He clocked 47.50 in the process and that is 2 1/2 lengths quicker than what Sebastian did over the trip when winning at the track last time out.

Guvna can boss proceedings in A1

In the A1 (21:06), T2 Special Guvna can cash-in on a drop in class to get back to winning ways.

Ernie Gaskin’s dog has been competing in Opens of late and ran well last time out over course and distance when quickly away and leading until getting badly checked at a crucial stage before finishing third to Laughing Gravy.

That is strong form in the context of this graded affair and Special Guvna has a 33 per cent strike rate in A1 company having won three of his nine starts.

He is also six from 19 when sporting the blue jacket and if getting away in his best style can boss proceedings from the off for a trap-to-line success.

Romford best bets

20:18 T4 Dashing Star (NB)
20:34 T2 Bubbly Secret
20:50 T1 Billys Bullet
21:06 T2 Special Guvna (NAP)
