Sheffield best bets: Tynwald Baz to dominate in Steel City showcase

David Metcalf | September 6, 2016

Baz can lift the Steel City Cup at Sheffield

Coral’s experts provide their best bets for a Sky televised Open card at Sheffield featuring the final of the Steel City Cup.

Tynwald Baz worth a bet in Steel City Cup showpiece

The Steel City Cup Final (21:08) is the feature race on an excellent evening of Open action at Sheffield tonight, screened live on Sky Sports 5 and T3 Tynwald Baz looks decent value to land the spoils.

Greyhounds - Brighton & Hove Greyhound Stadium

Laurence Tuffin’s son of Droopys Jet is a really likeable sort who comes into the contest in terrific form having won five of his last seven starts.

He was impressive in the opening heats when producing a 4.18 sectional to flash from the traps and make all to beat Swift Hansel by two lengths and ran a blinder in last week’s semis when a 3/4 length runner-up to Ballymac Mossjoe.

Tynwald Baz got crowded at the first bend in the latter before running on strongly at the death and with Mossjoe now drawn out wide in Trap 5 looks nicely housed to reverse the form.

If Baz can ping and show his customary early pace to lead the inside he is going to take some catching and his recent splits suggest that he has every chance of doing just that.

Genie can make his backers dreams come true

T1 Ela Ela Genie is an improving sort and rates a solid bet in the 280m Sprint (19:59).

Mark Wallis’s charge has built up a really solid profile and has been holding his own against some of the best sprinters in the country.

Greyhounds - Brough Park

He stayed on strongly over course and distance to beat the re-opposing T4 Walk The Talk on his penultimate outing and lost little in defeat last time out at the track when getting bumped at the first bend before being beaten 2 1/4 lengths into second behind Walshes Hill.

Ela Ela Genie faces nothing of the calibre of that rival on this occasion and looks nice drawn in the red jacket to turn in a handy pitch and power home late on.

Maum Legend drawn to deliver

T5 Maum Legend has a terrific strike rate at the track and can capitalise on what looks a peach of a draw to further enhance it in the 500m Standard (20:16).

Greyhounds - Newcastle Ground Track

Jimmy Wright’s veteran is four from eight at the venue and one from two when sporting the orange jacket.

The son of Cashen Legend has been a terrific servant over the years and will find this much easier than last week’s semis of the Steel City Cup in which he finished a 4 1/2 length sixth to Ballymac Mossjoe.

Prior to that he had won twice over course and distance by an average of just over 3 1/2 lengths and with four railers on his inside, and the distinct possibility of trouble, can lead the first bend and quickly establish a winning lead.

Tiger can roar to victory

In the other 500m Standard (20:51), T2 Barricane Tiger is difficult to oppose.

Patrick Janssens’ Coral Sussex Cup hero was very impressive two starts back over course and distance when quickly away and making all to score by 2 1/4 lengths.

Greyhounds - Romford Greyhound Stadium

Barricane Tiger then produced an identical sectional of 4.18 in last week’s semi finals of the Steel City Cup, only to get badly crowded at the first bend before finishing a 3 3/4 length fourth to Ballymac Mossjoe.

He looked slightly unlucky, and with slow and erratic starters on either side this looks a great opportunity for him to gain some sort of compensation with a trap-to-line success.

Sheffield best bets

19:59 T1 Ela Ela Genie
20:16 T5 Maum Legend (NAP)
20:51 T2 Barricane Tiger (NB)
21:08 T3 Tynwald Baz
