Bet of the day: Wednesday’s Racing

Frank Monkhouse | 1 February 2017

We pick through the all-weather card at Kempton

Trainer Ruth Carr is expected to provide us with a winner on the all-weather meeting at Kempton on Wednesday. Seven races get going at 2.20pm with a trappy one-mile contest, but we have little more than an interest until our best bet goes in the 4.20pm.

Seven-furlongs awaits a competitive seven-runner field on the polytrack, but if my thinking is correct, Lexington Times will ask some serious questions of the more fancied runners in the field. Ruth Carr’s vastly-experienced five-year-old has been pretty uninspiring of late, but looks to have every chance today.

A runner-up behind Safe Voyage – beaten 1 ½ lengths – at Newcastle just five days ago, the fact that he has been sent straight back into action is a strong hint that connections think he can improve a place this time.

He continues to slump down the weights and looks to be fast-approaching a winning mark. There was only one too good last time, with jockey Garritty on his back and with the pair reunited here that must be marked down as a real positive in his chances. The selection has been well-worked in January, given three starts, and will arrive sharp, fit and ready for business.

Charlie Hills saddles Garter, who is our next best

Garter well worth holding on to

Previous course and distance winner Garter is back in action and shapes as the next best of the card in the 3.50pm fillies handicap, again over a snappy seven-furlongs. Charlie Hills’ hope has been knocking on the door of late, winning at Lingfield and then placing in each of her last two.

The pick ended runner-up behind Fire Diamond on her penultimate go, but was beaten just a neck on that occasion, being picked up on the line. Jockey Callum Shepherd was in charge last time and returns for another crack at it. Let’s hope they can get a clearer run and bag the prize money.

2.50 – Excel Again

3.20 – Envisaging

3.50 – Garter
