Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf: Partisan Politics get the vote

Trainer Chad Brown launches a four-pronged attack on the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita tonight (10.50), and although Lady Eli is the shortest of the quartet in the betting I am very sweet on the chances of outsider Partisan Politics.

The daughter of More Than Ready has only had three starts, and built on a promising debut run to land the P.G. Johnson Stakes at Saratoga when coming from off the pace to score going away in good style by 2 3/4 lengths.

Partisan Politics then ran far better than her finishing position suggests when a 4 3/4 length fourth to Lady Eli in the Grade 3 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont.

After being held-up well off the pace on the inside in a slowly run race, Partisan Politics ran into all sorts of traffic problems when trying to close a 1 1/2 furlongs from home and stayed on well without ever threatening to get on terms.

This race looks sure to be run at blistering pace which could set it up for a closer, and Partisan Politics fits that bill.

The selection has also put in what her trainer describes as an “outstanding” piece of work since the Grillo and believes she will have no problem with the track.

It also worth noting that Partisan Politics was sent off just a point bigger in the betting than Lady Eli in the Grillo, so I don’t think that there should be such a huge price discrepancy between the pair in the market for this.

At the odds on offer, I think Partisan Politics is cracking each-way value.

The favourite for the race is the Sunset Glow, and she looks to hold an obvious chance if lasting out the mile.

Trained by the brilliant Wesley Ward, the daughter of Exchange Rate finished a cracking second behind Cursory Glance in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Ascot and that form has worked out really well.

Sunset Glow was given a two month break after that effort, and has returned to action with a pair of Graded wins at De Mar.

The last of those came in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante over 7f where she was always just doing enough to score by a neck.

However she is a speedy sort who could get drawn into an early speed battle, and that raises doubts as to whether the step up a a mile for the first time will suit.
