Brighton Preview: Flipping and Hughes a potent combination
Flipping was a massive eye-catcher on seasonal reappearance and with Richard Hughes in the saddle looks a worthy favourite to land the 1m handicap on today’s seven-race card at Brighton (15.50).
The Stuart Kittow trained gelding was constantly denied a clear run when finishing sixth of 13 to Squire in a class 5 contest at Windsor. keeping on under hands and heels and ending the race full of running.
There is little doubt in my mind that the eight-year-old would have gone very close to winning granted a clear passage, and that makes Flipping a major player in this lower grade class 6 affair off an unchanged mark.
Another plus is that Flipping will appreciate every drop of rain that has hit the track in the past 24 hours, and with Hughes in the saddle the son of Kheleyf looks the one they all have to beat.
Calm Attitude won first time up last year and with underfoot conditions in her favour can repeat the dose to land the 1m 2f handicap (16.20).
The five-year-old sliced up by 3 1/2 lengths at Chepstow off a mark of 67, and went on to finish runner-up on two occasions off higher marks.
They included an excellent a 1 1/4 length second to Treasure The Ridge in a competitive 16-runner class 2 contest at Sandown off 81, and Calm Attitude gets into this lower grade this class 3 race off just 3lb higher.
It gives the Rae Guest trained mare every chance at the weights, and Calm Attitude looks the type who is open to further progression after just 12 starts.
In the 5f handicap (16.50), the John Gallagher trained Iseemist has plenty going for her.
The filly showed progressive form when winning three times last year, including at this venue, and also finished an excellent second of 24 to Expose in the class 2 Bronze Cup at Ayr off a mark of 84.
Iseemist is now able to race in this lower grade class 4 contest off 1lb lower, having shaped as if coming to the boil last time out when third at Windsor.
That was the four-year-old’s third run of the campaign, and Iseemist should now be spot on to do herself justice.
