Brighton preview: My Mate weighted to open account
The evergreen Newmarket handler has saddled three winners from his last 10 runners, and in My Mate has a colt who has form to his name which stands out in this afternoon’s line-up.
Those runs include an excellent second of 13 at Salisbury last August off his current mark of 67, and a solid four length fifth of 11 to Go Dan Go on seasonal reappearance at Beverley off 3lb higher.
The form of the latter looks strong as the winner, from whom My Mate was receiving just 3lb, has come out and won twice since – including off a rating 85.
It makes My Mate look on a winnable mark in what is a weak class 5 contest, and the three-year-old won’t get a better chance than this to open his account.
Wiseton put in a much improved effort last time out and looks the answer to the 6f handicap that opens proceedings (14.30).
The gelding is yet to win in nine starts but showed much more sparkle on his first start for trainer Ivan Furtado when fourth of eight in a seller at Catterick last month.
Wiseton blasted from the stalls into a clear lead and only weakened out of contention when headed inside the final furlong.
Although beaten 5 1/4 lengths, Wiseton was running off an official rating of 49 and the first three home were rated 77, 69 and 70.
In the circumstances it was a cracking effort on such unfavourable terms, and if building on it Wiseton looks nicely treated now returned to handicap company off a mark of 54.
In the 1m 2f handicap (16.30), To The Sky can cash-in on a career-low mark to land the spoils.
The gelding has been a model on consistency over fences since joining trainer Jamie Snowdon, winning twice and finishing in the frame on six occasions in his last eight starts.
Seven-year-old To The Sky’s last win came at Newton Abbot in April off a mark of 105, and he is now able to race in this off just 47 on his flat debut for the yard.
That is 6lb lower than when To The Sky notched his sole success so far on the flat in an apprentice handicap at the Curragh back in 2012, and makes the son of Saffron Walden look weighted to take all the beating.
