Chelmsford preview: Money Team poised to follow-up

David Metcalf | January 13, 2016

Money Team scored in terrific style last time out and can make light of a 6lb penalty to follow-up in the 6f handicap on today’s card at Chelmsford (14.25).

The David Barron trained gelding ended a long losing run dating back to June 2014 when readily beating For Ayman by 2 3/4 lengths over course and distance 10 days ago.

Money Team travelled strongly throughout, and after making smooth progress to challenge at the furlong marker forged clear clear inside the last to win going away.

The five-year-old was value for more than the winning margin, and Money Team remains well-treated on his back form off a rating of 79 in this class 5 contest now turned out quickly under a penalty.

His previous success had come in a competitive class 4 affair at Redcar when beating the useful Online Alexander by a length off a rating of 80, and Money Team went on to be placed off marks as high as 88.

That suggests that the son of Kodiac remains ahead of the assessor and needs keeping onside now that he has regained the winning thread, and providing this doesn’t come too quickly Money Team is going to be very hard to beat.

Schottische to claim first win in a year

In the 1m apprentice handicap (13.55), Schottische can take advantage of a drop in the weights to land the spoils.

Trained by Alan Bailey, the mare was last successful at Southwell 12 months ago when battling on to beat Poppy Bond by 3/4 of a length off a mark of 57.

The six-year-old is now able to race off 4lb lower, and prior to disappointing last time out had shaped better than the bare result suggests when a five length fourth of 13 to Roger Thorpe in an amateur riders’ handicap at Southwell.

Schottische received little assistance from the saddle in the early stages and quickly found herself in an awful position at the rear of the field, but then stayed on nicely up the home straight to be nearest at the finish.

It was an eye-catching run given that the daughter of Pastoral Pursuits usually races more prominently on the heels of the leaders, and one which suggests Schottische is a big player on the pick of her form in what is a weak class 6 contest lacking any real strength in depth.
