Chelmsford Preview – Excellent George to Dominate
He faced much better opponents at Newmarket last time out when finishing a respectable fifth of eight off bottom weight. He didn’t have the ability to get any closer that day but should find things easier in this grade.
He has won on the all-weather before at Wolverhampton and has reasonable course form having finished second of seven at Chelmsford earlier this year over this trip. He’s improved since then and a drop of 2lbs in the handicap to 77 will only aid his chances.
One of the main dangers in the race is Bertie Blu Boy who is going for the four-timer. The handicapper is desperately trying to halt his improvement and this race may be one step too far for his supporters. Vimy Ridge gets a hand from star apprentice Eddie Greatrex and his 7lb claim will be of great use to his chances.
Excellent George should have too much for these and a mark of 77 is extremely workable. He should be able to improve in this lower grade and will take all the beating.
In the 21.20, Atalan is fancied to take advantage at the weights and improve now eased in class.
Well beaten last time out at Nottingham in a class five finishing twelve lengths behind the leaders, he faced much better opposition that day and today’s opponents aren’t as strong so Atalan can prove he is worth a mark in the low-60s.
He will have to beat Duke Street who won incredibly well last time out, but Atalan is probably better value given the drop in grade. Duke Street has to demonstrate he can shoulder a 6lb penalty up further in trip which effectively leaves him off a career high mark.
Atalan is taken to be better value than the favourite given the drop in grade and same handicap mark. He races off joint bottom weight in this field and he should be able to improve again up in trip.
