2016 Cheltenham Festival ante post plays: Childrens on the List

David Metcalf | March 8, 2016

Childrens List has plenty going for him in Martin Pipe

Trainer Willie Mullins has a tremendous record in the Martin Pipe Contional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, so his Childrens List looks decent each-way value at 14/1 with Coral in this year’s renewal of the Cheltenham Festival contest on Friday, March 18th.

The leading Irish handler has won three of the seven runnings, including the last two with Don Poli and Killultagh Vic.

In Childrens List, Mullins has a gelding that had some useful form in bumpers, including when sixth of 13 to Champion Hurdle hope Identity Thief at Fairyhouse.

The six-year-old has gone on to win two of his nine starts over hurdles, and has also made the frame on four occasions.

Form of Navan run looks strong

Golan Lodge

They include a solid fourth of 14 behind Gordon Elliott’s Prince of Scars in a competitive contest at Navan where, after being held-up miles off the pace and given a mountain to climb, Childrens List stayed on strongly to be nearest at the finish and beaten just over four lengths.

Princes of Scars has since gone on to land the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown, where he defeated current World Hurdle second-favourite Alpha Des Obeaux by four lengths.

That gives the form a very strong look and, given how the Navan race panned out, Childrens List deserves great credit for finishing so close to a rival now rated 155.

Childrens List has since gone on to finish a solid 1/2 length second to Golan Lodge in a 12-runner affair at Leopardstown, and Not For Buning who finished eight lengths behind him in third has won since to give the form a boost.

Progressive profile and more to come

Golan Lodge

Although the son of Presenting now has to run off a career-high rating of 139, that should not be beyond Childrens List given his generally progressive profile and run behind Prince Of Scars.

He also looks the type who has more to offer, and a strong gallop and big field in the Martin Pipe will enable him to settle better as he does have a tendency to pull hard in the earlier stages.

Another plus is that six-year-old horses have a good record in the race having won five of the seven runnings, and Childrens List is sure to have a top-class pilot in the saddle given his powerful connections.
