Fakenham Preview: Gone Too Far looks the real McCoy

Gone Too Far can take advantage of an ease in grade to land the 2m 5f handicap chase at Fakenham today (2.50).

The Alan King trained gelding had some very smart form to his name in bumpers and over hurdles, winning twice and finishing placed behind some smart sorts in the shape of Garde La Victoire and Vaniteux.

This seven-year-old is yet to cut any ice in three starts since being sent chasing this season, but those runs have come in decent class contests and this is by far the easiest task Gone Too Far has faced.

The son of Kayf Tara has the size and scope to do well over the obstacles, and Gone Too Far’s current mark of 124 looks very exploitable judged on his hurdling exploits.

Gone Too Far also now gets 19-time champion AP McCoy on board for just the second time this season, and the sharp track should play to his strengths.

It’s also interesting that Gone Too Far is the first runner that King has had at the venue for over a year, and the Barbury Castle handler has a decent strike rate of just under 20 per cent at the track since 2000.

In the 2m selling handicap hurdle that opens proceedings (1.15), Summertime Lady is potentially thrown in at the weights on the pick of her form now dropped in class.

The mare shaped well in a couple of decent bumpers when trained by Colin Tizzard, finishing seventh of 13 to Tea For Two at Wincanton and fourth of nine to The Pirates Queen at Taunton.

Those winners are very useful sorts now rated 153 and 135 respectively over hurdles, and both contests have thrown up plenty of subsequent winners.

Summertime Lady then showed steady progress in three runs over hurdles without being knocked before joining trainer Ben Pauling at the start of this season.

The seven-year-old has so far failed to shine in two runs for her new handler, but has been well-supported on both occasions and having been allotted and opening mark of 95 is now able to race off just 87.

That looks very lenient, especially judged on Summertime Lady’s bumper form, and the daughter of Desert King also now drops into selling company for the first time.
