Ffos Las preview: Lobster Cocktail a tasty proposition under Berry

David Metcalf | September 20, 2016

Lots to like about Lobster Cocktail

Lobster Cocktail is a rare runner at Ffos Las for trainer Ed Walker and looks to hold leading claims of landing the 1m handicap on today’s seven-race twilight card at the Welsh venue (17.20).

The Newmarket handler has had just four runners at the track, saddling one winner and another to be placed.

In Lobster Cocktail he has a colt who ran with promise on debut when a not knocked about eighth of 13 to Frenchman at Lingfield, and went on to shape better than the bare result suggests in hot races at Haydock and Newmarket, won by the now 92 and 100-rated Lusory and Wilamina.

Lobster Cocktail can provide Ed Walker with a winner.

The three-year-old was allotted a lowly opening mark of just 56 on the back of those efforts but failed to shine off it when a well-beaten 11th of 13 on handicap debut at Redcar over 1m 1f.

Booking of Berry a big plus

However, there was much more to like about his latest effort when staying on to finish a two length third over 7f at Wolverhampton off his current mark of 54 and the step back up in trip looks sure to suit.

Lobster Cocktail has also been heavily backed in his last two outings and that suggests that connections believe they have a well handicapped sort on their hands who is better than what he has shown so far on the racecourse.

With Fran Berry now taking over in the saddle for the first time this looks a nice opening for Lobster Cocktail to finally get off the mark.

Free Passage can cash-in on class drop

Free Passage has been knocking on the door of late and can cash-in on a drop in class to gain a deserved first success in the 1m 4f handicap (18.55).

Henry Candy will hope to have a winner in Free Passage.

The Henry Candy trained gelding has shown improved form since being stepped up to 1m 2f, finishing a fine 1/2 length runner-up to Pink Ribbon in a class 5 contest at Windsor and staying on 1/2 length third in a similar grade affair at this venue three weeks ago.

Judged on those effort the extra two furlongs in this look sure to suit and the handicapper has been kind in leaving Free Passage on an unchanged mark of 65.

That should be more than expoitable on the pick of his form, especially as the son of Medicean now drops down into class 6 company for the first time.

Connections have also found what looks an extremely weak contest for the grade lacking any real strength in depth and it looks a gilt edged opportunity for Free Passage to finally get his head in front where it matters most.

16.50: Amaany
17.20: Lobster Cocktail (NAP)
17.50: Auric Goldfinger
