Glorious Goodwood (15.10): Basem poised to complete hat-trick
Basem looks a pattern performer in the making and can defy a further rise in the weights to land the big 1m handicap on day four of Glorious Goodwood (15.10).
The Saaed bin Surror trained colt is unbeaten in two starts this season, and looked an above average sort in the first of those when overcoming trouble in-running to come with a surging late run and beat Jacon Black by a neck at Sandown off amark of 94.
Basem was value for far more than the winning margin, and readily defied a 5lb rise in the weights to follow up at the same venue earlier in the month.
After half-rearing as the stalls opened, Basem soon recovered to race on the heels of the leaders and found a good turn of foot when switched to challenge to put the race to bed.
Although the three-year-old held on by just 1/2 a length from the fast finishing Munaaser, he was idling in front and only doing enough.
To me Basem had plenty of petrol left in the tank and it was a performance which suggested he could well be up to making an impact in Listed/Group company.
If that is the case then a further 5lb rise in the weights is unlikely to be enough to stop the ultra-progressive son of Pivotal going in again.
There are plenty of dangers in a wide open affair, and Magic City and You’re Fired made my shortlist.
Magic City is a three-time winner at the venue and ran a blinder to finish second to Red Avenger in this 12 months ago.
The Richard Hannon trained gelding encountered all sorts of trouble in-running before flying home to be beaten just 1/2 a length and looked an unlucky loser.
Although now 5lb higher in the weights, that is offset by the claim of crack apprentice Tom Marquand and Magic City is not badly treated on the pick of his form.
You’re Fired is trained by Karl Burke and has posted two solid efforts in his last three starts to finish placed in competitive handicaps at York.
In the last of those he had many of his rivals in this in behind, and it would be no surprise to see the gelding prove better than his current mark of 97.
Coral’s betting tip – Basem a brilliant bet at 5/1
