Glorious Goodwood 2016: War primed for Vintage mission

David Metcalf | July 25, 2016

War Decree can triumph in Vintage Stakes battle

War Decree lost little in defeat when runner-up last time out and can get back to winning ways in the Group 2 Vintage at Goodwood (14.35).

The colt hails from the all-conquering yard of Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien and created a good impression when scoring on debut at Leopardstown.

War Decree stayed on strongly to beat Orderofthegarter by 1 1/2 lengths and the pair pulled five lengths clear of the third home.

Classic trials day

It was a most taking performance which suggested the two-year-old was an above-average sort who needed keeping firmly onside and that view was confirmed when War Decree finished runner-up in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket earlier in the month.

Plenty more to come

The son of War Front looked all over the winner when produced to take up the running inside the last by jockey Ryan Moore but Boynton rallied well to get back-up and prevail by 3/4 of a length.

War Decree still showed distinct signs of greenness and now receives 3lb from the winner.

With the prospect of plenty more improvement looking assured, and the stable in flying form, that should be enough to see War Decree gain his revenge.

Larchmont Lad feared most

Boynton is now unbeaten in two starts but faces a tough task giving away 3lb all-round for his success in the Superlative and Larchmont Lad may well prove the biggest danger to the selection.

Larchmont Lad

The colt is trained by Richard Hannon and there was lots to like about his debut success at Sandown.

After showing plenty of pace to track the leaders the son of Foostepsinthesand took up the running approaching the final furlong to draw clear and beat Maths Prize by 3 1/4 lengths.

The runner-up is a well-regarded sort who has come out and won since to give the form a boost and it looked an above average race for the grade.

This obviously requires more but Hannon’s father Richard won the race on four consecutive occasions between 2010-14 and Larchmont lad looks an exciting prospect who should be up to making his mark in Group company.

Coral’s top tip: War Decree looks to hold outstanding claims of providing trainer Aidan O’Brien with another Group winner. Larchmont Lad created a good impression on debut and is feared most.
