Gordon Elliott’s Layla Joan can be star turn at Doncaster

There is an excellent supporting card at Doncaster on Grimthorpe Chase day. The Listed Mares’ Hurdle at 2.20 features some promising types including Layla Joan and Toubeera.

Gordon Elliott has already plundered a couple of races at Ayr with Layla Joan and she was particularly impressive in trouncing Fine Rightly by six lengths last time. The gelding came out and bolted up at Wetherby last week.

Tony McCoy was on board on that occasion and never had to ask the daughter of Oscar a serious question. Paul Carberry takes the ride on Saturday and can be expected to stalk Toubeera who is on a four-timer.

They don’t come much tougher than Toubeera who galloped on relentlessly to win at Haydock over this strip. The Venetia Williams runner looks the biggest threat along with Nicky Henderson’s Mayfair Music.

Carberry should also employ waiting tactics aboard leading Grand National hope Monbeg Dude in the featured Grimthorpe Handicap Chase. The former Welsh National winner has been raised 8lbs for his impressive Cheltenham victory but looked to have plenty in hand last time out.

Charlie Longsdon’s Drop Out Joe has sound claims in the three mile handicap hurdle at 4.05. He was a big drifter in the betting at Warwick last time out but ran a good race to finish third to Uncle Jimmy.

The going was very testing that day and the better surface at Doncaster should bring about some improvement. Easy Catterick winner Hartforth could be the main danger after coming home well clear in heavy ground.

The Henderson/Geraghty team should not leave empty handed as Tistory has a big chance in the 4.40 race.  He held every chance at the last flight before finishing second to Brother Brian at Newbury and a repeat of that performance would be good enough here.

The two-mile handicap chase at 2.55 looks wide open and it might be worth taking a chance with Alan King’s Turn Over Sivola. The stable are starting to churn out the winners again now and this consistent sort should be involved at the finish.

Selections: 1.45 Victor Hewgo, 2.20 Layla Joan, 2.55 Turn Over Sivola, 3.30 Monbeg Dude, 4.05 Drop Out Joe, 4.40 Tistory, 5.15 Shout It Aloud
