Hymn and Tonto look Top Notch at Sandown

There is some cracking flat action at Sandown today, and Coral are offering an enhanced double of 6/1 on Top Notch Tonto and Western Hymn landing the two feature races.

Top Notch Tonto runs in the bet365 Mile (2.45) and looks the one they have to beat according to the form book ,providing the ground remains on the soft side.

The Brian Ellison trained gelding was one of the revelations of last season, winning a Group 3 contest at Haydock before running the race of his life to finish runner-up to Olympic Glory in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.

The four-year-old had his main market rival today, Montiridge, just over five lengths behind him in fifth place when winning at Haydock and there is no reason to believe he will not confirm the placings.

Having said that, Richard Hannon’s charge should not be underestimated as the stable have won the race seven times in the last 10 years.

The colt is also course and distance winner, and is rated just 3lb below Top Notch Tonto on official ratings.

If Tonto needs the run, then the son of Ramonti is by far the most likely to take advantage and Coral are also offering an enhanced double of 13/2 about him and Western Hymn landing the spoils.

Western Hymn runs in the bet365 Classic trial (3.15) and it will be a major surprise if he does not complete the hat-trick and further enhance his Investec Derby claims.

John Gosden’s charge looked a smart prospect when scoring on his debut at Kempton back in December, where after being slowly away he made good headway on the outside to chase the leaders approaching the final furlong and only had to be shaken up before quickening clear to score by 2 3/4 lengths.

The son of son of High Chaparall then took the step up in class in his stride when running out the impressive winner of a conditions contest at Newbury, where he travelled strongly before again showing an instant turn of foot to put the race to bed and win easily by 2 1/2 lengths.

That success saw Western Hymn cut for Derby glory at Epsom, and he has to win this if he is to justify his current odds of 14/1 with Coral for the big race on Saturday, June 7th.
