Kempton Preview – Baker’s charge can dominate proceedings

Guard of Honour was unlucky to bump into a well-handicapped horse last time out and can gain compensation today by winning the 8.25 at Kempton.

George Baker’s charge had a brief spell over hurdles where he managed to win off a mark of 111. He remains unexposed on the flat with only half a dozen starts to his name. He drew clear of the field on his last start where he was beaten by Sir Mark Prescott’s Jolie Blonde. His opponent that day was very well-handicapped and given he looked very much the best of the rest, he has a great chance off just 2lbs higher today.

He was quite far back on his last start and with a more positive ride, he could make his stamina count over today’s extra furlong. James Doyle is a very positive booking and he has an excellent chance to break his duck on the flat. He’s a son of Galileo so he shouldn’t be devoid of ability and although it’s a decent field, he can make his class count.

Absolutlyfantastic is perhaps his biggest danger and most certainly an interesting opponent given this is his first start on the flat in the UK. He won off 110 over hurdles in July and given he has come from Henry de Bromhead’s yard; he could be well weighted to give Guard of Honour most to think about today.

In the 7.55 at Kempton, Khusoosy can build on an impressive seasonal debut and land a treble for the Godolphin operation.

He took a while to get going on his last start and connections step him up in trip by another furlong today which will undoubtedly aid his chances. He’s been raised 7lbs for his victory and this is by far his toughest task to date. He looks a highly progressive sort and given connections have given him just shy of three weeks to recover, he should have bags of improvement again.

He’s one of the most unexposed horses in the field but will be made to work for it tonight by Landwade Lad. James Fanshawe’s gelding finally broke his maiden tag last time out when soaring clear over today’s trip. He won really easily that day and although he receives a penalty, its effect shouldn’t be felt too much given the weight-for-age allowance of which Khusoosy also receives.

He finished behind the striking Almodovar at Leicester earlier in the season and he should be capable of more improvement but I would suggest Khusoosy is more likely to improve of the pair.

Godolphin’s bay gelding clearly isn’t a stable star in the grand scheme of things but he is a very able sort and he can take this step up in class in his stride.
