Kempton Preview: Shalambar and Crowley a potent combination
Shalambar has a terrific record at Kempton and can further enhance it with victory in the 2m handicap there today (3.40).
The Tony Carroll trained gelding is a five-timer winner at the venue, and one of those successes have come over this afternoon’s trip.
Shalambar slammed Ogaritmo by six lengths off a mark of 59 on that occasion, and now races off just 6lb higher having bounced right back to his best in his last two starts.
In the first of those, the son of Dalakhani cruised clear to score by 3 1/2 lengths over 1m 4f at this track.
The eight-year-old then finished a solid fourth last time out at Dundalk, again over 1m 4f, when partnered by Joseph O’Brien.
Shalambar is now reunited with Jim Crowley who has partnered him to his last four wins on the level and clearly knows how to get the very best out of the veteran.
That is a big plus and with the step back up to 2m holding no fears, Shalambar is going to be very tough to beat for a yard that are in good form at present.
Crowley looks to have a chance of landing a double on the card aboard Hedge End in the 1m 3f handicap (5.10).
The Richard Hannon trained filly is on a losing run of 13, having not scored since landing a class 5 contest over a mile at the track 12 months ago off a mark of 74.
However, the three-year-old has made the frame on seven occasions and the form of her second to Mymatechris over course and distance two starts back off 78 looks particularly strong.
The winner, who was receiving 9lb from Hedge End, is a rapidly improving sort who went on to bolt up by nine lengths at Lingfield next time up and the pair pulled 3 1/4 lengths clear of the third home.
That is solid form in the context of this contest, and Hedge End was also far from disgraced last time out over course and distance when fourth of 10 to Solidairty in a class 3 contest.
The drop back down to class 4 company will suit and off just 1lb higher than when runner-up to Mymatechris, Hedge End looks weighted to run a huge race from a good draw in stall 1.
