Kirby Calls It: All Weather champion previews his nine weekend rides
I ride Gabrial’s Wawa here. He won for me last week. He travelled round really well, quickened up nicely but half cut out on me in the last half a furlong. But when one came at him he knuckled down and stayed at it. He’s an okay horse but he’s got a very bad draw in this race, so he’ll need a bit of luck. He’s been put up 2Ibs but I’m not worried about that, I’m more concerned about his draw. He’s drawn eleven. He’s a hold up horse, so we’ll be coming off the back but if things go to plan he’ll be there or thereabouts.
I’m on Arc Lighter for Seamus Durack in this race. To be honest I’m totally in the dark about this one. I rode the horse at Doncaster last September when he was last of ten when well beaten. He ran at Wolverhampton the following month and didn’t fare much better but has come down the handicap a bit. He hasn’t ran since then but I wouldn’t be worried about the break as Seamus can bring them to the races pretty straight, I just hope the break has done him good.
This is probably my best chance of a winner on the card. I ride Gold Trail for Mr Appleby. I won on him three weeks ago at Lingfield. He was joined a furlong down and looked vulnerable but battled on really well. He really tries. He could be at the top end of his handicap but goes there with every chance. The top horse, Noble Gift is the one we have to beat, but I’d be pretty hopeful my horse can run a big race.
I ride Wanting here for Mr Appleby. She’s a sweet little filly. It’s her first run but she’s been doing everything okay at home. It’s her first day at school and she’ll learn plenty from it but I’d be hopeful she’ll run a nice race. She’s ready for her first race but we’ll play it by ear and hope for the best.
I’m on another Mr Appleby horse in this race. I ride Bow And Arrow. I won on him when he won his maiden on his last start. He did win quite nicely, travelled well throughout the race and picked it up about a furlong down and drew well clear. As I say it was a nice run but how competitive the maiden was I’m not too sure. He’s a horse that has been given a little bit of time so hopefully the time he’s had has strengthened him up. He’s up in trip so he’ll need to settle and stay but I’m hopeful he’ll run a good run.
I ride Warden Bond here for William Stone. I don’t know too much about this horse. I haven’t ridden him before, so I’m a little in the dark. His form looks solid and he’s the highest rated in the race but he’s draw eleven and Chelmsford is no different to any other All-Weather track, it’s definitely a disadvantage. It’s a low grade handicap so hopefully he’ll run well.
I ride Stone Of Folca here for John Best. He’s come down the handicap a fair bit. I think he was rated 104 as a 3yo so obviously needs to be respected but really does need to improve to get involved. He’s been running poorly and is back after a break but on a positive he’s drawn three so I’m be hoping we can jump out and run a decent race.
I’m on Crystalized for Dean Ivory here. I have ridden this horse before but he ran a fortnight ago for the first time since mid-summer so you’d think he should improve for that. It’s pretty low grade stuff but he’s going to have to raise his game a bit to be in the shake-up. He’s got a good draw which is a help so hopefully we’ll get a good run.
My last ride of the day is for John Jenkins on Karam Albaari. I rode him last week where he ran well, just bumped into a well handicapped one. He’s a horse that pulls quite hard and needs to be held up to come late. You can’t get to the front on him too soon really. He can be quite hard to ride. He’s in good form. He ran well last week so if he gets the run of the race; we’re there with every chance. If things go his way, he’s probably my best chance of a winner on the day.
