Light can shine at Yarmouth for red-hot Gosden
Trainer John Gosden has enjoyed a tremendous start to the flat racing season, and Freedom’s Light looks to hold outstanding claims of providing him with another winner in the 1m 2f handicap at Yarmouth today (5.55).
The daughter of Galileo has only had three starts, and opened her account in good style on the last of those when beating Flemish School by 1 1/2 lengths at Lingfield back in November.
The four-year-old scored with more in hand than the winning margin suggests, and the runner-up has won since and finished runner-up off a mark of 79.
That gives the form a solid look and suggests that Freedom’s Light could well have got in lightly on her handicap debut off an opening mark of 80.
Newmarket trainer Sir Michael Stoute has a 33% strike-rate with his runners at the seaside venue, and that makes Mairise of obvious interest now upped in trip on his handicap debut (5.25).
The son of Athorised is from the same family as the top class Notnowcato, and could be thrown-in at the weights off an opening mark of just 70.
The three-year-old showed signs of ability in three quick maidens runs at the end of last year, most notably when a keeping on fifth to the now 104-rated Western Hymn over a mile at Kempton.
The step up to 1m 2f this afternoon looks sure to suit, and having been gelded since his last run it it would be no suprise to see Mairise prove a different proposition now going handicapping off what could well be a very lenient mark judged on his run behind Western Hymn.
Sir Mike makes his debut for Luca Cumani in the mile handicap (6.25), and with Frankie Dettori in the saddle looks capable of making it a winning one.
The gelding showed progressive form last season when trained by Amanda Perrett, winning three times and posting a career-best effort when third to Chookie Royale over 7f at Kempton when last seen in action.
It would be no surprise to see five-year-old improve again now that he is in the care of Cumani, and the Newmarket handler has a tremendous strike-rate of 35% with his runners at the track.
