Lingfield preview: Mud-loving Gores Island has plenty going for him
David Metcalf | November 10, 2015
Trainer Gary Moore has his team in fine form and Gores Island looks to hold outstanding claims of providing him with another winner in the 2m handicap chase to today’s card at Lingfield (15.00).
Wincanton win adds increased motivation
The gelding is a dual winner over fences on heavy ground, with the last of those successes coming at Wincanton back in January where he battled on tenaciously to score by 1/2 a length off a mark of 127. Gores Island got put up to 134 for that victory and was far from disgraced off it when 10th out of 20 to Irish Cavalier in a hot Listed class 1 handicap at the Cheltenham Festival.
The nine-year-old then failed to sparkle in two subsequent outings, but there was plenty to like about his recent comeback run when third on good ground at Kempton. Gores Island was held-up well off the pace before staying on under considerate handling to be beaten 24 lengths. That run should have blow away the cobwebs and put the son of Beneficial spot on for this, and he has since been dropped another 2lb to 130.
It makes Gores Island nicely-treated on the pick of his form, especially now that he gets the bottomless conditions he relishes at a track where he is 1-1 over this afternoon’s trip.
In the 2m 3f handicap that opens proceedings (13.00), Flementime can take advantage of a drop in the weights to get back on the winning trail.
The Martin Keighley trained seven-year-old showed some smart form over hurdles in 2014, winning in good style on heavy ground at Southwell before finishing a solid second on handicap debut at Exeter off 125. Flementime then had her attentions switched to chasing, but failed to sparkle in three runs over the larger obstacles after being allotted an opening chase mark of 129.
The mare simply didn’t take to chasing, but now returns to hurdles and is able to race off a reduced rating of 123. That makes Flementime well-treated if ready to roll after 313 days on the sidelines, and fitness is unlikely to be an issue as the daughter of Flemsfirth has gone well fresh in the past.
