Lingfield Preview: Scent can Power home on handicap debut

Scent Of Power has form to her name which suggests she could be well-weighted on handicap debut in the 6f nursery at Lingfield today (3.00).

The Anthony Carson trained filly has only had three starts, and shaped with plenty of promise when well-backed on debut and a 1 1/2 length third to Multi Quest at Bath.

The daughter of Authorized then showed plenty of pace before fading late-on to finish fifth of seven behind Felix Leiter at Yarmouth.

Although eventually beaten 7 3/4 lengths, the winner is an above average sort who has since gone on to score twice and is now rated 88 and Scent Of Power finished 4 1/2 lengths in front of Park Glen who went on to win her next two starts and is now rated 84.

That is strong form in the context of this class 6 contest, and makes Scent Of Power look potentially well-treated off an opening handicap mark of just 52.

Although Scent Of Power finished last at this venue on her latest start, that was on the all-weather surface and it would be no surprise to see her bounce back now returned to the turf.

In the 1m 2f feature handicape (5.05), Placidia looks decent value to provide in-form trainer David Lanigan with back-to-back successes in the contest.

The Newmarket handler sent out Tinghir, who also sported the colours of Placidia’s owner Bjorn Neilsen, to win the race 12 months ago.

In Placidia, he has a filly whose sole success came in a maiden over course and distance and looks potentially well-treated off a mark of 82 based on that effort.

The daughter of Sea The Stars was always travelling well and after quickening clear at the furlong marker stayed on well to score by a comfortable 2 1/2 lengths from Scallop.

The runner-up went on to bolt up in a maiden before winning a handicap off 84, and the fourth home Allegria also won next time up to give the form a solid look.

Placidia has since been well-beaten in two runs on the turf, but ran far better than the final finishing position suggests in the first of those at Goodwood when fading late on over a 1m 4f trip that was too far having been in front at the two furlong marker.

The drop back to 1m 2f is sure to suit, as is the return to the polytrack surface, and Placidia looks to have been primed for this contest bybhre shrewd connections.
