Lingfield Preview – Whaleweigh Station to return to form

In the 3.20 at Lingfield, Whaleweigh Station can return to form in an uninspiring six furlong handicap. He’s only won once in twenty-one starts but he returns to the track in which he recorded that victory just under a year ago.

Winning off a mark of 76, John Jenkin’s charge was highly tried in competitive class three and four races but found life a little tough. He struggled on the turf and couldn’t return to the ability he had shown as a two year-old – once finishing fifth in a group two.

His mark has fallen from 85 to 81 since the start of the season and although he’s still 5lbs higher than his last and only win, he has the chance to bounce back to form here.

He’s top-weight and highest rated and connections clearly fancy his chances with Jamie Spencer booked to ride. He is still only four years of age and it’s very impossible that he will be able to find improvement off this lowly mark.

Showtime Star will prove difficult to beat following two very good finishes on his last two starts. Gay Kelleway’s charge has gone up 6lbs in the weights for those efforts and Whaleweigh Station looks to be the better handicapped of the two.

In the 3.50, John Gosden’s Blue Chip looks to have a very good chance of breaking her maiden tag. She’s certainly not the sort of horse Gosden would persist with if he didn’t think he could get a win out of her.

She’s run three times to date, once on the all-weather so we can be fairly sure she’ll handle conditions. She’s looked a bit one-paced in all her starts to date and as a result, connections have stepped her up in distance by three furlongs following her last start over 1m 4f at Chester.

She’s a well-bred filly by Galileo so she shouldn’t be devoid of ability and with the blinkers applied, a mark of 68 may just underestimate her.
