Muharrib looks worth a flutter in 32Red Casino Handicap

Muharrib ended last season with a smooth victory in a competitive nursery at Doncaster. He made a belated return to action recently at the same track when showing plenty of promise.

After missing the break, he was given plenty of time to get into his stride by Mikhael Barzalona and made headway before his fitness told in the closing stages. He was not knocked about in the closing stages and finished a fair third to Intrigo.

The son of Oasis Dream has an ambitious entry in the Betfred Mile at Goodwood and connections will be looking for some encouragement here. Luca Cumani’s Mafakeh could prove a serious threat after finishing ahead of Muharrib at Doncaster.

That was the third start of the season for Mafakeh and he may not have as much scope for improvement. Muharrib also enjoys a 4lb pull in the weights for being beaten a little over three lengths and it should be close between the pair.

Sir Michael Stoute’s runners can never be overlooked in handicaps and Defendant must also come into the reckoning here. He won his maiden in great style but has been beaten twice since. He was unlucky in running at Sandown and performed with credit against older horses last time.

Richard Hannon’s Prince’s Trust runs in the colours of Her Majesty The Queen and won his maiden comfortably here in the spring. That form is difficult to assess but he looks to have been given every chance off a mark of 88 here.

Aussie Reigns won decisively here last month for William Knight before finishing second to Azma. He was comfortably held that day and the handicapper may have got his measure.

Stepping Ahead won a couple of modest races before running far too freely at York whilst Jammy Guest was not disgraced in the Jersey Stakes. He was sent off at 66-1 that day but finished in midfield and will be far more at home in this company.
