Newbury preview: Blameitalonmyroots the one to beat

David Metcalf | December 16, 2015

Blameitalonmyroots scored in good style on his debut over the larger obstacles, and can take advantage of what looks a lenient mark to follow-up in the 2m 7f novices’ handicap chase on today’s card at Newbury (12.40).

The gelding was a point winner in Ireland, and showed progressive form over hurdles last season after joining trainer Oliver Sherwood.

Blameitalonmyroots won once and finished in the frame on three occasions from just four starts, but his handler always maintained that the strapping son of Turtle Island would come into his own when sent chasing.

Blameitalonmyroots a brilliant bet

That view was confirmed when the five-year-old made a winning debut in that sphere when beating Teddy Tee at Bangor last month on seasonal reappearance.

Blameitalonmyroots jumped well the the head of affairs and showed a tremendously game attitude when challenged to dig deep and score by a length.

It was a most taking performance and the third home Subtle Grey, who was beaten 16 lengths, has since come out an won a novices’ handicap chase off a rating of 124.

That gives the form a solid look and suggests that the handicapper has taken a chance in allotting Blameitalonmyroots an opening handicap mark of just 122.

Exmoor mist a clear contender

In the 2m handicap chase (13.50), Exmoor Mist can defy a rise in the weights to follow-up his success earlier in the month

Racehorse trainer Victor Dartnall . 09/08/06

The Victor Dartnall trained gelding is a lightly-raced sort who came good at the second time of asking over fences when scoring by three lengths at Leicester two weeks ago off a mark of 103.

Exmoor Mist only had to be ridden clear to score with more in hand than the winning margin, and it was an effort which suggested the seven-year-old needing keeping firmly onside.

A 7lb rise looks more than fair given the manner of that victory, and with Denis O’Regan in the saddle the son of Kay Tara is going to be a tough nut to crack.
