Newmarket Preview: Headline to make news at Newmarket
Headline News can take the 8.10 at Newmarket this evening for Rae Guest and Chris Catlin.
This lightly raced six year-old mare is a very smart performer and she’s been battling out a host of class three and two contests over the past year. She performed well on her first start of the year only losing out by four lengths and given she probably needed that run it was a fair effort.
The handicapper has dropped her 2lbs for that run which looks rather generous and having won a competitive class three off 84 only three starts ago she could be well treated here. That race wasn’t as strong as this but the handicapper was sufficiently impressed to put her up 5lbs so with 3lbs of that rise gone she is in with a great chance.
She’s versatile ground wise having won on both good to soft and good to firm and with the latter forecast she should have ideal conditions today. She’s up three furlongs on her last run which will suit and everything looks well placed for a very good run.
In the 5.35, Secret Lightning can take advantage of a weak fillies’ handicap and land the spoils.
Racing off the second lowest weight, she’s a solid mid-60’s performer on official handicap ratings and she now faces a mark more in her favour. She was slightly disappointing on her last run off 69 but that was in a higher class of race and so a chance is taken on her bouncing back to form in this grade.
She steps up to ten furlongs today, the furthest she has ever faced. It’ll be interesting to see how she copes with the step up in trip but having performed well over nine furlongs, an extra furlong shouldn’t pose too many issues. 67 is probably the limit of what she wants to race off but with conditions to suit in a weak contest, she can win this race.
