Newmarket Preview: Treble chance for Buick

Newmarket stage an excellent seven-race card today, and jockey William Buick has major claims of landing a treble courtesy of Much Promise, Cloudscape and Magique.

Much Promise makes her handicap debut in the 6f contest (2.30) and could well have got in lightly.

The John Gosden trained filly had some strong form when placed in maidens prior to scoring in good style when last seen in action at Kempton.

Those runs included a head second to Magnus Maximus at Kempton, and the winner has since gone on to land a valauble sales race at Newmarket and is now officially rated 101.

That is solid form and makes Much Promise look potentially very well-treated off an opening mark of 80.

The daughter of Holy Roman Emperor is also bred to be better as a three-year-old and hails from a family that handles soft ground.

Cloudscape lost his unbeaten record when just fifth in a Listed contest last time out but looks worth another chance now dropped back into handicap company (4.15).

The colt won his first two starts in the style of a useful performer, and the second of those successes came over course and distance where the son of Dansili showed a good turn of foot to beat Windshear with more in hand than the winning margin of 3/4 of a lengths suggests.

The runner-up has gone on to score since and finish an excellent runner-up in the valuable London Gold Cup at Newbury to give the form a solid look, and that suggests Cloudscape should be up to winning more races from his current mark of 95.

Magique runs in the 1m 2f fillies’ handicap (5.25) and looks weighted to make a winning return to action.

The Jeremy Noseda trained filly is just 2lb higher then when winning a mile contest on soft ground at Windsor back in October, where she showed a nice turn of foot to beat Rainbow Beauty by 1 1/4 lengths.

The daughter Jeremy shaped that day as if a step up to today’s 1m 2f trip would suit, and the fact that she ran well on her reappearance last season suggests that Magique is capable of overcoming an absence of 213 days on the sidelines and will not be found wanting through lack of fitness.
