Newmarket Preview: Judge gets the verdict in Earl Of Sefton

Just The Judge will relish the quick conditions at headquarters and can make her class tell to get back to winning ways in the Earl Of Sefton Stakes (4.40).

The Charlie Hills trained filly put in a cracking effort on her first run last season when chasing home Sky Lantern in the 1000 Guineas at this venue, and then went one better in the Irish equivalent when comfortably beating Rehn’s Nest by 1 1/2 lengths.

The daughter of Lawman then ran very well to finish third behind Sky Lantern in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot before disapointing in two subsequent starts.

Having competed in Group 1 contests on all five starts last season , Just The Judge now takes a marked drop down into Group 3 company, and is undoubtedly the class act in the line-up.

With underfoot conditions in her favour, she looks sure to take all the beating in the hands of Jamie Spencer.

In the Abernant Stakes (3.30), Aljamaaheer is a fascinating contender now dropped down to 6f for the first time since winning on his racecourse debut.

Roger Varian’s five-year-old is a top class performer over 7f and a mile, and has a high cruising speed and excellent turn of foot.

The son of Dubawi has always struck me as the type that had the right weapons in his armoury to make a major impact on the sprinting scene, and this Group 3 contest looks the ideal launchpad for what could be a very successful season.

It will be disappointing if Aljamaaheer doesn’t prove too classy to prevail, in what doesn’t look the strongest renewals of the contest, before going on to better things.

Toormore puts his 2000 Guineas credentials on the line in the Craven Stakes (4.05) and is fully expected to come through with flying colours.

Richard Hannon’s colt was unbeaten in three runs as a juvenile, with his last success coming in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh.

That win earned the son of Arakan status of champion two-year-old with an official rating of 122, and he is rated 11lb an upwards superior to his five rivals.

His stable has also won the last two runnings of the contest with Trumper Major and Toronado, and Toormore rates a solid bet to complete the hat-trick at the main expense of the Godolphin-owned Be Ready.
