Newmarket Saturday Preview
Newmarket’s Saturday card opens up with a two-year-old race for maiden fillies over seven furlongs. The market may prove the best guide to finding the winner here but Casual Smile (by Sea The Stars out of Oaks winner Casual Look) catches the eye on pedigree. Night Song and Dime Dancer may be among the more forward of these.
William Haggas has his team in fine form and the lightly-raced Conduct is an interesting contender in the handicap at 4.00. The six-year-old is having his first start since leaving Sir Michael Stoute’s yard.
Anomaly is another making a return from a lengthy absence whilst those with a fitness advantage include Fennell Bay and the bottom weight Ningara.
Godolphin have a strong hand in the Sweet Solera Stakes with Wedding Ring and Ihtimal. The former came out on top here earlier in the season and both fillies ran with credit at Royal Ascot. Midnite Angel ran a cracker last Saturday when second to the handicap “good thing” J Wonder whilst Baby Bush could be anything.
Gabriel’s Lad steps up to seven furlongs in the 4.10 after two disappointing efforts in major sprint handicaps. Shamdarley missed an engagement at Goodwood and comes here fresh whilst Albaqaa is a standing dish at this course.
Refectory put up a most encouraging performance on his debut when second to Urban Dance and could go one better in the 4.45. Mark Johnston’s Bostonian may be the biggest threat but She’s Late has so far failed to live up to earlier promise.
Intrigo ran another fine race when third in a competitive handicap at Ascot behind Yeager and must have a great chance to get back on the winning trail in the 5.20. The lightly-raced Breden could have got in quite lightly here and represents the Gosden-Buick combination.
The closing staying handicap at 5.55 looks one of the trickiest races on the card but the in-form Argent Knight should give a good account of himself.
Selections: 2.25 Casual Smile, 3.00 Ningara, 3.35 Ihtimal, 4.10 Shamdarley, 4.45 Refectory (NAP), 5.20 Breden (nb), 5.55 Argent Knight
