Peslier eyes Group 1 glory with French raider Vorda

A superb day’s racing at Newmarket begins with three Group races before the ultra-competitive Cambridgeshire Handicap at 3.50. The star names are out in force for two significant two-year-old championship races and the Sun Chariot Stakes.

The action kicks off at 2.00 with the Royal Lodge Stakes which sees the long-awaited reappearance of Chesham Stakes winner Berkshire. The colt is the best that Trainer Paul Cole has had in his yard for a long time and he is as low as 16-1 for the 2000 Guineas.

He is likely to be given a tough test by Mark Johnston’s Somewhat who comprehensively beat Godolphin’s Be Ready at Newbury on his last start. Aidan O’Brien’s Kingfisher will provide a useful form line to the top colts in Ireland.

The Cheveley Park Stakes at 2.35 invariably throws up a leading Guineas candidate and Kiyoshi is aiming to get back on track after her disqualification in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She has shown a tendency to hang in the closing stages of her races and Jamie Spencer will be looking to preserve her finishing kick until as late as possible.

The one to beat looks to be the French raider Vorda who lost her unbeaten record at the hands of No Nay Never in the Prix Morny. There was no disgrace in that effort and she has the assistance of Olivier Peslier in the saddle.

The Sun Chariot Stakes at 3.10 sets up another intriguing clash between Falmouth Stakes first and second, Elusive Kate and Sky Lantern. Many onlookers felt that Richard Hannon’s grey would certainly have won had she not been taken across the track in the final furlong.

An appeal by the Hannon team was dismissed and they will be eager to see their judgement vindicated with victory on Saturday. Irish Guineas winner Just The Judge and the consistent Duntle may also have a say in matters in a top class renewal.

The Cambridgeshire at 3.50 looks as competitive as ever with punters keen to swerve the soft ground horses after a drying week. The best supported in recent days have been Frankie Dettori’s mount Graphic and stable companion Queensberry Rules, ridden by Ryan Moore.
