Fighting Fifth Hurdle ante post tips

Petit Mouchoir odds give Irish trainer Henry De Bromhead leading claims of landing back-to-back winners of the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle on Saturday (14:55).

The County Waterford-based handler saddled Identity Thief to land the spoils 12 months ago and, like Petit Mouchoir, that one carried the famous maroon and white colours of Gigginstown House Stud.

In this year’s contender, those powerful connections and in-form handler have a five-year-old, who had some very useful form to his name last season when in the care of Willie Mullins.

Petit Mouchoir opened his account over hurdles at the first time of asking when scoring easily at Thurles. He then ran a blinder when stepped up into Grade 1 company and finishing a 1 1/2 length third to Long Dog at Leopardstown.

Cracking efforts at Aintree and Punchestown

This gelding subsequently disappointed when a well beaten third of four in a Grade 1 at the same venue, before posting a solid effort to finish a keeping on eight of 14 to Altior in a very strong renewal of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Petit Mouchoir later ran a stormer when collared close home and beaten just a neck by the highly regarded Buveur D’air in a Grade 1 at Aintree’s Grand National meeting. He then rounded off the campaign with a half-a-length second in a similar grade affair at the Punchestown Festival.

A split between Mullins and Gigginstown then saw the son of Al Namix move to De Bromhead, and there was lots to like about Petit Mouchoir’s first run for his new handler when third of four to Rashaan in a Grade 2 at Down Royal.

Eye-catching return to action

After travelling strongly throughout in third, Petit Mouchoir found himself short of room approaching two out and made a mistake at the last when switched left to see daylight.

Although Petit Mouchoir changed trainers, he still has plenty to offer punters.

He then kept on under tender handling to be beaten 3 1/4 lengths, and it was an eye-catching effort which left the distinct impression that he may well have won if given a more positive ride.

Gigginstown were also represented in that contest by last season’s leading juvenile Apple’s Jade, who was sent off long odds-on, but ran a lifeless race to finish second.

It may well have been that they thought the filly was much better than Petit Mouchir, and as a result the selection was ridden with the view of bagging second place behind her.

However, that plan clearly didn’t go as expected and Petit Mouchoir arguably travelled like the best horse in the race and thus emerged with the most credit.

Petit Mouchoir odds have plenty going for them

It was a performance which suggested Petit Mouchoir should have plenty more to offer this season and he is entitled to come on a bundle for the outing.

Apple's Jade is also entered in the race for Gigginstown, but this may be one horse to swerve according to Fighting Fifth Hurdle ante post tips.

Despite Apple’s Jade figuring among the eight declarations for this contest at the five-day stage, it seems unlikely Petit Mouchoir will be ridden the same way as at Down Royal, given the immense promise he showed.

As Apple’s Jade now has questions to answer, there’s all to play for and the gloves will now surely be off.

If that proves to be the case, expect Petit Mouchir to turn the tables, and you can make a case for stronger form in the book than favourite Sceau Royal.

While Sceau Royal has won both his starts this season, including at Cheltenham, he arguably hasn’t beaten much in doing so.
