Recanted to revive Breeders’ Cup memories in Superlative Stakes
The Group 2 Superlative Stakes has attracted a quality field including four unbeaten colts in the headed by Recanted. He will be ridden by Frankie Dettori for Brian Meehan and runs in the colours of Red Rocks, a winner at the Breeders’ Cup for this combination in 2006.
Recanted, a good looking son of Empire Maker, popped up at 14-1 at Newbury on his debut. He beat a couple of decent sorts in Pearl Spectre and Showpiece and was running on strongly at the finish.
Richard Fahey’s Good Old Boy Lukey has won at Hamilton and Newcastle and looks likely to appreciate the step up to seven furlongs. Ryan Moore is an interesting booking for Good Old Boy Lukey, as is that of Johnny Murtagh on Mark Johnston’s Somewhat.
He won easily as Musselburgh and then attempted to make all of the running in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, eventually fading into fourth behind Berkshire. Several horses that have run well at Ascot have struggled to reproduce the form this week but he must have a decent chance.
Richard Hannon’s Washaar won over this strip in good to soft ground at Haydock despite hanging left under pressure. Peter Chapple-Hyam’s Noble Metal fought back after being headed on his debut at Leicester and has the assistance of Richard Hughes in the saddle.
Mick Channon’s Rosso Corsa is the most experienced in the field having raced four times and will find this a good deal easier than the Coventry Stakes. Vigor comes into the reckoning after following up his debut second to Lucky Kristale (a winner here yesterday) with an effortless win at Brighton.
He had only four rivals at the seaside track but treated them with contempt as he sauntered to a six-length victory. Clive Brittain’s Street Force is the only maiden in the field but showed plenty of promise on his debut when fourth at Sandown.
Brittain is not afraid to run his horses anywhere if he thinks they are good enough and Street Force was sent to Royal Ascot next time out. He made no show in the Chesham but it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise if he were to run into a place here.
