Redcar preview: Azamesse holds all the aces
David Metcalf | October 26, 2015
Trained in Ireland by John Feane, Azamesse is a lightly raced and improving filly who has made he frame in five of her eight starts.
The three-year-old shaped really well two starts back at Hamilton when third of 10 to Regal Ways over 1m 4f, travelling well on the heels of the leaders before getting outpaced three from home when the tempo quickened and then keeping on again to be beaten three lengths.
Azamesse backed that up with a cracking head second over 1m 5f at Ayr 28 days ago when getting collared in the dying strides.
That was the daughter of Azamour’s second run back following a lay off and she should now be spot on to do herself justice.
Azamesse also looks sure to appreciate the further step up in trip, and having initially been rated 73 is now she is now able to race off 6lb lower.
That makes Azamesse look well-treated on the pick of her form, and this is a weak class 5 contest which looks a glorious opportunity for her to get of the mark.
In the 6f handicap (16.15), Orwellian is weighted to go well at a big price.
The Bryan Smart trained gelding was successful three times last year, with the last of those victories coming at Newcastle on good-to-soft ground off a mark of 65.
The six-year-old was put up to 71 for that triumph and has failed to trouble the judge in four starts this season.
However, Orwellian caught the eye two starts back over 6f at Thirsk when after being slowly away and outpaced he stayed on under tender handling to finish eighth of 14 to Grissom off a mark of 70.
The son of Bahamian Bounty, who is a course and distance winner, was also far from disgraced last time out over 7f at this venue and is now able to race off just 65.
That is the same when last successful, and gives Orwellian major claims from a handicapping perspective.
