Yarmouth preview: Arabian Queen can rule in seaside sizzler

David Metcalf | September 14, 2016

Arabian Queen to prevail in Yarmouth showdown

Today’s card at Yarmouth features a fascinating showdown between top fillies Arabian Queen and So Mi Dar in the Listed 1m 2f John Musker Fillies Stakes (15.25) and the former looks decent value to emerge victorious.

The David Elsworth trained four-year-old is a four-time winner who sprang a 50/1 shock when lowering the colours of Investec Derby and Coral-Eclipse winner Golden Horn in last year’s Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York.

Arabian Queen showed tremendous guts to hold on gamely and the pair pulled clear of the likes of The Grey Gatsby and Time Test.

That form sets a clear standard in this line-up and although the selection has failed to get her head in front in four subsequent outings she did run a blinder on seasonal reappearance at Newmarket when a length runner-up to Usherette in the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes.

Favoured by race conditions

Arabian Queen then suffered an injury when seventh to Postponed in a Group 1 contest at Epsom but now returns to the fray following a break in a far less competitive affair and has won after a lay-off in the past.

It will be the first time in her career that she has raced in Listed company, and the daughter of Dubawi is favoured by the conditions of the race as she receives 1lb from unbeaten three-year-old So Mi Dar who is also returning to action from injury following an impressive success in the Group 3 Musidora Stakes at York back in May.

Arabian Queen already has 3lb in hand on that rival on official ratings, so that makes her the one to beat in a mouthwatering clash.

Mazzini poised to follow-up

Mazzini scored in terrific style last time out and can make light of a rise in the weights to follow-up in the 6f handicap (17.35).

James Fanshawe Mazzini is looking to follow up on his success last time out and win the 17.35.

After being held-up well off the pace in the hands of a confident Freddie Tylickci, the James Fanshawe trained gelding made smooth headway a furlong from home before showing a smart turn of foot to take up the running a 100 yards out and beat Kenny the Captain by 3/4 of a length in a 10-runner contest at Newcastle.

It was a most taking performance and one which suggested the gelding needed keeping firmly onside.

The form of the race has also worked out well with the runner-up having gone on to score twice since, and that suggests a 7lb rise is unlikely to be enough to stop the progressive Mazzini going in again.

With the yard in decent nick, and Tylicki once again in the saddle, the son of Exceed And Excel can take this en route to better things.
