Southwell and Wolverhampton previews: Daddy can deliver

David Metcalf | March 7, 2016

Minella Daddy poised to follow-up at Southwell

Minella Daddy created a good impression when scoring last time out and can make the most of the weight he receives from Final Nudge to follow-up in the 2m 4f novices’ hurdle on today’s card at Southwell (15.00).

The gelding was bought for £60k after finishing runner-up twice in Irish points and, after joining trainer Peter Bowen, came good at the third time of asking under rules when beating Girly Girl in impressive fashion at Fakenham.

After racing prominently throughout, Minella Daddy took up the running two from home and forged clear approaching the last to win by six lengths.

It was a most taking performance, and the form looks strong as the runner-up is a well-regarded sort who has since come out and bolted up by 41 lengths.

Judged on the ease with which Minella Daddy gave 6lb to that rival he looks to have a bright future and needs keeping firmly onside.

The seven-year-old also remains unexposed and open to stacks of improvement, and receives a handy 7lb from main market rival Final Nudge on ground which will be very testing.

Foot The Bill weighted to get back to winning ways

In the 3m handicap chase (14.30), Foot The Bill can cash-on on a drop in the weights to land the spoils.

The Patrick Holmes trained gelding was last successful at Catterick back in December 2014 when scoring by 30 lengths off a mark of 94.

Foot The Bill has been lightly-raced since and had just seven starts, and is now able to race off 6lb lower.

That gives the 11-year-old every chnace from a handicapping perspective, and Foot The Bill comes into the contest having shaped really well when staying on to finish a 3 1/2 length third at Musselburgh.

The runner-up Proud Gamble has come out and won since to give the form a strong look in the context of this contest, and if taking another step forward Foot The Bill looks weighted to take all the beating.

Selections:

14.00: Moscow Me
14.30: Foot The Bill (NB)
15.00: Minella Daddy (NAP)
15.30: Bertie Lugg
16.00: Carlo Rocks
16.30: Rebekah Rabbit

Masterpaver weighted to strike at Wolverhampton

Masterpaver has beccome well-treated and looks the answer to the 1m 2f handicap on today’s card at Wolverhampton (1.50).

The Alan Bailey trained gelding is on a losing run of 15, having not scored since landing a 1m 6f contest at the track back in November 2014 off a rating of 88.

However, Master Paver has run well on several occasions to make the frame off marks of 94, 92, and 91.

The five-year-old is now able to race off 88 again, and has caught the eye in two of his last three starts.

In the first of those at Lingfield, Masterpaver raced wide before getting outpaced two from home and then staying on again to finish a 4 1/4 length fifth to Winterlude.

Materpaver now meets the winner on 8lb better terms, and shaped as if his time could be near when a never nearer 2 1/2 length fifth at Lingfield last time out when unsuited by how the race developed in what was a slow run affair.

Bogsnog can kiss rivals goodbye

In the 6f handicap (14.50), Bognsog can taken advantage of a drop in the weights to get back to winning ways.

The Kristin Stubb’s gelding is a three-time winner at the track, and those successes have come off marks of 74, 74, and and 61.

Bogsnog was last successful at Thirsk nine months ago off 63, and is now able to race off 62.
That gives the six-year-old major claims the weights at a track which clearly suits.

It’s also interesting that Bogsnog now drops back down in trip, as both his last two successes have come over 6f.

The stable is also in good form at present having saddled two winners and seven placed from its last 15 runners, and from a good draw in stall four everything looks in place for a huge run.

Selections:

14.20: Quality Art
14.50: Bogsnog (NB)
15.20: Monpazier
15.50: Potternello
16.20: Viewpoint
16.50: Masterpaver (NAP)
17.20: Les Gar Gan
17.50: Pivotal Flame
