Taunton preview: Oscar Jane poised to follow-up

David Metcalf | November 12, 2015

Oscar Jane scored with tons in hand last time out and can make light of a 7lb penalty to follow-up in the 2m 7f handicap hurdle that opens proceedings on today’s card at Taunton (13.10).

The Johnny Farrelly trained mare gained due reward for a series of solid efforts when making ll to win easing down by six lengths at Towcester off a mark of 77.

Oscar Jane jumped superbly throughout, never looked in danger at any stage, and was value for far more than the winning margin.

It was a most impressive performance, and the eight-year-old is due to race off a revised mark of 87 in future races.

Therefore, it’s no surprise to see connections turn out Oscar Jane quickly under a 7lb penalty, as it means that she is 3lb well-in at the weights.

It is going to make the daughter of Oscar very difficult to beat, and she remains very well treated on the pick of her form.

Oscar Jane was rated as high as 102 in the past, so off a mark of 84 she looks well ahead of the assessor and weighted to take all the beating.

Modus favourite on obstacles debut

In the 2m 3f novices’ hurdle (14.40), Modus looks a worthy red-hot favourite to make a winning debut over the obstacles.

The gelding was a very smart bumper performer when trained by Robert Stephens, winning twice and finishing runner-up to Moon Racer in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival back in March.

Modus also ran a blinder when third of 13 top Belshill at the Punchestown Festival when last seen in action, and has since been bought by leading owner JP McManus and sent to champion trainer Paul Nicholls.

The five-year-old has the potential to take high rank amongst this season’s novice hurdlers, and can take this with the minimum of fuss en route to much better things.
