Thirsk preview: Sweet on the chances of Sugar Town

Sugar Town looks weighted to land the 7f handicap on this evening’s card at Thirsk for the second year running (18.40).

The Peter Niven trained mare made all to score by a neck 12 months ago off a mark of 51, and went on to finish a solid runner-up next time out off 53.

Sugar Town also posted a solid effort on her final start last season off 56, and is now able to race off 52.

It gives the five-year-old major claims from a handicapping perspective, and Sugar Town comes into the contest after a promising reappearance run when fifth of 13 over course and distance.

The daughter of Elusive City showed plenty of early dash to lead until three furlongs out, and after rallying once being headed only weakened out of contention at the furlong marker to be beaten 4 1/2 lengths.

Sugar Town shaped as if needing the run and should now be spot on to do herself justice.

Another plus is that Sugar Town has bagged a great draw for a front runner in stall one from which to attack, and with Graham Lee in the saddle everything points to a big run.

Sovereign Bounty was found to have suffered a breathing problem when a slightly disappointing fifth last time out at Newcastle, but had previously looked ahead of his mark and can get back to winning ways in the 1m handicap that closes proceedings (21.10).

The Jedd O’Keeffe shaped really well on handicap debut when a 2 3/4 length third to Go Dan Go over 7f at this venue, racing keenly at the head of affairs on his first start for 267 days but sticking to the task well without being unduly not unduly knocked.

The winner, to whom Sovereign Bounty was conceding 2lb, has come out and won three times since and is now rated 97 and the runner-up Mustaqbal also tasted success next time up.

That gave the form an extremely solid look, and Sovereign Bounty duly took advantage of his lenient mark of 70 to open his account in good style at this venue on his penultimate outing.

After tracking the leaders, Sovereign Bounty only had to be driven out to beat Mrs Biggs by a neck and was well on top at the line.

The son of Bahamian Bounty scored with more in hand than the winning margin suggests, and and it was an effort which suggested his current mark of 74 was very exploitable.
