Windsor Preview: Polybius ready to cut a dash

Polybius disappointed on handicap debut but looks worth another chance to confirm earlier promise in the 6f feature contest at Windsor this evening (7.55).

Trained by David Lanigan, the gelding shaped with plenty of promise when fifth on debut at Newbury before bolting up by three lengths over course and distance last month.

The son of Oasis Dream travelled strongly throughout the 6f contest, making smooth headway two from home on the outside of the field before leading at the furlong marker and quickening clear to win easing down.

It was a very taking performance, and one which suggested Polybius needed firmly keeping on side.

The three-year-old’s opening mark of 84 looked on the lenient side judge on the back of that win, but Polybius failed to deliver the goods on handicap debut when sent off 7/4 favourite and finishing fifth of nine to Nova Champ over course and distance last time out.

However, Polyius raced very keenly that day and kept on to be beaten just 1 3/4 lengths and could well prove a different proposition if settling better this evening off 1lb lower.

To me he still has the potential to be far better than a class 4 animal, and in receipt of 7lb from the favourite Mission Approved can bounce back to winning ways.

In the extended 1m 3f fillies’ hanicap (8.55), Shama’s Song looks a worthy favourite to provide in-form jockey Ryan Moore with yet another winner.

The Sir Michael Stoute trained daughter of Teofilo has only had four runs, and came close to opening her account on the last of those when a 3/4 length runner-up to Lisamour over 1m 2f at Nottingham.

There was plenty to like about the way Shama’s Song stuck to the task, and the form of the race look strong with the the fifth and eighth home – Ejadah and Koliakhova – scoring next time out.

Shama’s Song will appreciate the step up in trip this evening judged on that effort, and off just 2lb higher this respresents a good opportunity for the filly to get her head in front.
