Wolverhampton Preview: Robbin can run rivals Ragged

Ragged Robbin looks ahead of the handicapper and can land the hat-trick in the 1m 4f contest at Wolverhampton this evening (8.30).

The David Lanigan trained gelding has shown improved form since going handicapping, cruising home by 4 1/2 lengths from The Ginger Berry in 1m 4f contest at Kempton before following up under a 6lb penalty at Lingfield.

This three-year-old didn’t seem ideally suited by the drop back to 1m 2f in the latter, but found plenty when strongly pressed inside the furlong to beat Hallingham by 1/2 a length.

To me, Ragged Robbin scored with a bit up his sleeve and a further 3lb rise in the weights looks on the lenient side.

The son of Speightstown is a half-brother to the smart Main Sequence and certainly bred to be much better than his current mark of 70, and the step back up to 1m 4f is sure to suit.

With the Lanigan stable in flying form, and Ted Durcan in the saddle, Ragged Robbin should be more than capable of winning this class 5 contest.

Postscript ran a cracker when runner-up last time out and looks weighted to go one better in the 1m 1f handicap (7.00).

The Richard Fahey trained gelding failed by just a neck to overall Maverick at Leicester and now meets that rival on 9lb better terms.

That should be more than enough to see Postscript turn the tables, and the six-year-old’s current mark of 81 is the lowest he has run off in two years.

It makes Postcript look potentially thrown-in at the weights in this class 4 contest, as the son of Pivotal is 6lb lower than when last successful in a class 2 contest at Haydock 14 months ago.

In the 6f handicap (8.00), Honey Dew is an interesting contender having shaped as if coming back to form when fourth at Kempton earlier in the month.

The filly took a keen hold and was forced to race wide before staying on to be beaten five lengths by Tahchee, and it was an effort which suggested that Honey Dew was ready to take advanatge of her falling handicap mark.

This four-year-old is running off a career-low rating of 61, and is 2lb lower than when last successful at this venue in December.
