Wolverhampton preview: Torres primed to score

David Metcalf | December 14, 2015

Hernando Torres ran a blinder when runner-up last time out and can go one better to land the the 1m apprentice handicap on today’s card at Wolverhampton (17.10).

The Mick Easterby trained gelding scored over 1m 1f at the track back in January off a mark of 60, and went on to follow-up in good style off 65 at Newcastle when only having to be driven out to score by a cosy 2 1/4 lengths.

Hernando Torres backed that up with two solid thirds off 72, including in a competitive class 4 contest at York when beaten just two lengths.

The seven-year-old is now able to race in this lower grade class 5 affair off 69, and comes into the contest on the back of two solid efforts.

In the first of those over course and distance, Hernando Torres looked the likely winner when taking up the running inside the last before being headed closes home and beaten 3/4 of a length into fourth behind Street Force.

The son of Iffraaj backed that up with a cracking second to Pactolus over 1m 1f at at this track when attempting to make all before getting collard deep inside the last and beaten just over a length.

Pactolus has come out and won again since to give the form a boost, and it was an effort which makes Hernando Torres look weighted to take all the beating off an unchanged mark.

Next Edition can end winless run

Next Edition

In the 1m 5f handicap (15.05), the dangerously well-treated Next Edition looks decent value to score an overdue success following an eye-catching run last time out.

The Phil Kirby trained gelding is on a long losing run, having not scored since landing a class 4 contest at Musselburgh back in May 2013 by 3 1/4 lengths off a mark of 76.

However, the seven-year-old has run well to make the frame on numerous occasions and is now able to race in this class 5 affair off a career-low rating of just 60.

That is a massive 16lbs lower than when last successful, and Next Edition comes into the race having returned to form when third of 12 to With Hindsight over course and distance two weeks ago.

Next Edition travelled strongly throughout and cruised into the contest two from home, but then got little assistance in the saddle from his inexperienced rider inside the final furlong to go down by just 1 1/2 lengths.

Given stronger handling Next Edition may well have prevailed, but it was nevertheless still a very promising effort and one which suggested the son of Antonius Pius was ready to cash-in on his reduced rating.
