York Ebor Festival 2015: Acomb Stakes preview (14.30)
The William Haggas trained colt shaped with bags of promise on his debut at Newbury when staying on under a hands and heels ride after being slowly away to be beaten just over one length into third behind two more experienced rivals.
Recorder looked to green to do himself justice, and duly improved for the outing to open his account in good style at Newmarket last month.
After racing keenly on the heels of the leader, the son of Galileo ran on strongly when produced to lead inside the final furlong to beat Culurati by a neck without being knocked about.
Recorder was only asked to do what was necessary to get the job done, and the third and fourth home have both come out and won since to give the form a boost.
It was a performance which suggested Recorder was an above average type who was well worth a crack at this level, and the two-year-old hails from a yard who love nothing more than to have a winner at this meeting.
There are plenty of dangers in what looks a wide open renewal of the 7f juvenile contest, and Adventurous commands plenty of respect now eased in grade.
The Mark Johnston trained colt has shown improved form in three outings and posted a career-best performance last time out when a solid fourth to the very exciting Shalaa in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes over 6f at Goodwood.
Although not match for the easy winner, Adventurous stuck to the task well to be beaten 5 1/2 lengths and the step up to 7f may well bring about further improvement.
Another very interesting contender is the Kevin Ryan trained Mohab.
The colt was unable to live up to market exceptions when finishing third on his debut over course and distance, but still ran a race full of promise to be beaten just one length.
Mohab then took advantage of an easy opportunity to open his account in a minor contest at Catterick when scooting clear a furlong form home to win easing down by eight lengths.
Although the son of Sir Percy beat little, the manner of the victory suggested Mohab had a big engine and he is held in very high regard by connections.
Coral’s betting tip – Recorder is a cracking price to win the Acomb Stakes (14:30).
