Weekend in pictures: Lions, Horn and Capri upset the odds

Frank Monkhouse | 3 July 2017

Snaps to round up the weekend shocks

It was a weekend of sporting shocks, as the British and Irish Lions beat New Zealand in the second test, against all the odds, on Saturday morning. Critics didn’t give Warren Gartland’s side any hope, but they ran out 24-21 winners, and now face a decider next week.

Elsewhere, and Manny Pacquiao was beaten by Jeff Horn in Australia, courtesy of a controversial points decision. Underdog Horn, taking part in only his 18th paid bout, probably did enough to get the decision, but a score of 117-111 from judge Waleska Roldan caused outrage.

Coral have picked out our favourite images from the weekend, which we feel cover the major headlines on Monday morning…..

British and Irish Lions’ Owen Farrell played a huge part in his side’s upset of New Zealand in Wellington. The hosts had Sonny Bill Williams sent off for a shoulder charge, and that opened the door for the Lions to roar to a last-gasp 24-21 victory. Next week’s third test decider promises to be interesting.

Jockey Seamie Heffernan celebrates a dramatic win in the Irish Derby at the Curragh on Capri, beating rival Cracksman by a neck. Race favourite Wings Of Eagles finished third in a gripping bunch finish. Capri scored at an SP 6/1, to delight those who kept faith.

Two years ago Manny Pacquiao fought Floyd Mayweather in the fight of our generation. On Saturday he was beaten on points by little-known Australian Jeff Horn. Pac has now lost four of his last nine fights, and time looks to be up.

British star Geraint Thomas of Team Sky retained the yellow jersey on Sunday in a fascinating second stage of this year’s Tour de France. There was no luck for defending champion Chris Froome, who crashed in the rain.

Germany won the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia, beating Chile in an entertaining final. Chile had the lion’s share of possession, but Stindl scored the only goal of the game, following a horrible individual error by Marcelo Diaz.
