Alastair Cook cut to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year

147 in his Final Test sees odds cut

England batsman Alastair Cook has seen his odds of winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2018 slashed this afternoon.

The 33-year-old is now 12/1 (from 20/1) to win the award following his century knock in the final innings of his Test career. Only four cricketers have ever won the award, with Andrew Flintoff the most recent back in 2005.

Cook faces stiff competition if he’s to change that statistic. Tour de France hero Geraint Thomas is the current 6/4 favourite. He’s followed by Golden Boot winner Harry Kane at 2/1 and Dina Asher-Smith at 8/1.

Even if he fails to win the top gong, the Coral traders do think he’ll land the BBC Lifetime Achievement award at 1/2. Elsewhere, it’s 3/1 that the Essex batsman receives a knighthood in the Queen’s New Years Honours list.

“Alastair Cook is definitely in the frame to be named as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, however, our betting suggests he will handed the Lifetime Achievement Award at the same ceremony in December,” said Coral’s John Hill.

“We’ve taken a flurry of bets in the last 24 hours on Cook being knighted in the Queen’s Honours List following what has been a superb career for England,” added Hill.
