Snakebite and Chizzy jostle
The 2016 World Championship has provided top tungsten entertainment in spades so far, with early eye-catching dust-ups already including Raymond van Barneveld versus both Stephen Bunting and Michael van Gerwen.
Most of the title chatter has focused on the likes of MvG but, on Wednesday evening, slight outsiders Peter Wright and Dave Chisnall will collide in a clash that could potentially send the victor on for further glory.
As if that wasn’t enough to raise the Alexandra Palace roof, 16-time world champion Phil Taylor faces Jelle Klaasen, while former BDO star Alan Norris squares-up to in-form Mark Webster.
Peter Wright v Dave Chisnall
Undoubtedly the darting highlight of the night, Wright and Chizzy make for an exciting last 16 pairing, as both boast brilliance and occasional inconsistencies in equal measure.
Neither have taken the top Ally Pally prize before, but the winner here could plant their flag for future fixtures. Snakebite is the current match favourite (odds-on at 4/5) but Chisnall is by far better value at even-money to triumph.
The English maximums master has taken the full spoils in nine of his previous 14 meetings with his Scottish opponent, and crucially four of five frays this year, including two meetings in majors.
There are an abundance off odds worth a wager that feature Chizzy, then, as customers can back the 180 specialist for a narrow 4-3 victory.
While, with such talent on the stage and Chisnall fresh from a tremendous televised nine-darter in the Grand Slam of Darts (and against Wright no less), a 20/1 price for a perfect finish from either player is more than worth a punt. There have been several close calls so far, and if the holy grail is to be hit this tournament, it could well be in this battle.
Alan Norris v Mark Webster
This match has hidden gem written all over it, as former BDO World Championship runner-up Norris and 2008 winner Webster wrangle.
Performing to his best at the moment, The Spider also boasts a previous semi-final finish in this PDC edition of the competition, which is reflected in his 4/5 favourite status.
Although, Chuck has had far less time to impress, having only switched to the PDC in 2015. What Norris has shown so far, however, has promised much potential, with two terrific Ally Pally outings. Full of confidence, the 43-year-old could prove much more profitable than his peer at evens to reach the quarters.
For more value for money, Chuck is also intriguing at 10/3 to be crowned King of the Oche (player to win match, most 180s and highest checkout. If any of the markets are tied, bets will be settled as losers).
