Taylor and Wright in tight fight for play-off right in Week 14
Week 14 of Premier League Darts at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle sees the penultimate round of the normal season, with three players fighting it out for the two final play-off places. Just one point separates hopefuls Phil Taylor, Peter Wright and Gary Anderson.
Dutch duo and table toppers Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld are all but assured of a semi-final spot, while Adrian Lewis, Dave Chisnall and Robert Thornton have no hope of finishing in the top four.
Gary Anderson v Dave Chisnall
Anderson has a fantastic chance to leapfrog either Taylor or Wright with a win against Chisnall in the opening match of the evening. He is still outside the play-off places, but is just one point behind the former, and level with the latter.
The Scot has not lost in his last five and, as his opponent has suffered defeat in four of his last five, back Anderson odds-on at 8/11 for victory. His fantastic 7-4 victory over van Gerwen last round shows the fight and determination the 2011 champion possesses, and take a price of 9/2 for him to record that scoreline again.
Adrian Lewis v Robert Thornton
The duo have nothing to play for anymore this season, so can enjoy the occasion. Lewis’ form has simply been dire, having lost four of his last five, and won only once in his previous 12.
Thornton at least has gained a draw and victory respectively recently, and is slight favourite against Lewis at 6/4. A draw at 7/2, however, is the best shout, as they shared the spoils earlier in the season as well.
Phil Taylor v Peter Wright
The biggest battle of the night in terms of importance. Taylor’s climb, literally from the bottom after Week 1, now sees him in third place, against the man he replaced last round.
Wright has moved in the opposite direction following shaky form, but a draw at 9/2 may not even be enough for the Scot to reach the semi-finals, as an angry Van Gerwen awaits him in his last match of the season. Back The Power (7/4 title hopes) odds-on at 1/2 to carry on his impressive form and win.
Raymond van Barneveld v Michael van Gerwen
With no pressure on the duo, as they both hold a 12 leg difference advantage over third place, they can enjoy this final battle of the night. Van Gerwen (5/4 to defend his title), however, has yet to lose two in a row in the league this season and, after being defeated last week by Anderson, he will hope avoid that feat.
Van Barneveld (11/2 to win his first Premier League), on the other hand, has been beaten just once this campaign, the next best is MVG with three, and a draw at 4/1 is the best shout. A 6-6 result will also ensure that the two Dutchmen will reach the semis. If you fancy RVB to exact his victory against his compatriot earlier in the season then back him at 2/1, or 4/5 for Van Gerwen to get revenge.
