Super Spieth surges to top of US Masters leaderboard

USA’s Jordan Spieth carded another sensational score in the second round of the US Masters to break the record for the opening two rounds, previously held at 131 for 39 years by Ray Floyd.

As a result, it means that Spieth is now heavily odds-on at 4/9 to win the tournament, and he doesn’t look like throwing his five shot lead away. However, at the age of just 21, going into the final day of the tournament with such a big lead could be a huge test of character.

Rory McIlroy, who squandered an eight shot lead on the final day in 2012, only just made the cut, finishing on two under par for the tournament, and has seen his odds drift out to 40/1.

Spieth’s fellow American Charley Hoffman is second on nine under par going into the third round, while it is a three way tie for third with Dustin Johnson and English hopes Justin Rose and Paul Casey on seven under, after some solid golf.

Rose and Casey are 14/1 and 22/1 respectively, with the former representing good value for a potential each way bet, after two consistent rounds so far. Just behind is course veteran Phil Mickelson, who with three victories to his name at Augusta already, knows how to win on this demanding course and taking odds of 25/1 could turn out to be a wise decision, with the American currently at six under par.

Ernie Els followed up an impressive first round score of five under, by making par and anything better than this will be a huge bonus, for the well-liked South African golfer. Odds of 125/1 indicate that he isn’t expected to last the pace, though if he is still there or thereabouts going into the final round, taking these odds each way could prove to be a canny investment.

Tiger Woods followed up his opening two over par, with a score of four under to tie with McIlroy, and his improvement is evident. If he can hang on in there until the final day, his confidence will improve, and with a confident Woods (80/1) playing his best golf, anything can happen.
