Six Nations Saturday treble

Frank Monkhouse | 18 March 2017

Round-up of the final weekend

It’s the fifth and final round of matches in the 2017 Six Nations tournament, and what a year it has been. England continued their dominance, Italy tightened their iron-grip on the wooden spoon, but going into the last weekend, there’s just one point between Ireland in second and Scotland in fifth.

We expect another deeply competitive three fixtures to finish, with each of the sides backed to stay within the agreed handicap. Rugby Union - 2015 RBS Six Nations - Scotland v Italy - Murrayfield Stadium

Scotland vs Italy

It has been yet another horrible outing for Italy fans, and they’ll finish bottom of the pile again, having taken a couple of big beatings along the way, both on the pitch and in the press for the way they set-up against England. Of course, there was nothing illegal about their approach against The Red Rose, but it certainly didn’t win them many fans.

They beat Scotland 22-19 at Murrayfield in 2015 for their sole victory that year, leaving The Thistle in last place. They’ll be so fired-up on the back of that negative press that I expect them to make a go of this one. Scotland should get the win, but I don’t predict the hammering traders do. The visitors +27 points on the handicap is massive, and that starts us off at even money.

Britain Six Nations Rugby Wales France

France vs Wales

Wales have been frustrating to follow – and bet on – this year. Their ability can’t be questioned, but they struggle to grasp any kind of consistency. They’ve won two and lost two so far, as have opponents France, but did claim that morale-boosting cheer over Ireland last week. That proved just what they are capable of on their day.

I’d give Wales a great chance of winning this if we were in Cardiff, but we’re not. France routed Italy last week, no surprises there, but they struggled at home for large parts of the game against a plucky Scotland, and if Wales have the self-belief, they could challenge. I’m taking them with a four-point head-start on the handicap at evens.

England v Ireland - 2016 RBS Six Nations - Twickenham Stadium

Ireland vs England

England ran down the competition again, although not quite as convincing as last year. They’ve receive a bit of a hard time from some sports scribes, but their winning form is staggering, and they absolutely crushed a good Scotland last week. The Tartan Army marched south in high spirits, but were wiped out 61-21. What a way to win the Calcutta Cup!

Ireland offered very little, certainly in terms of entertainment, when losing on the road to Wales last weekend, the 22-9 result telling us everything we need to know about how that one went. The locals will double their efforts for the visit of England however, that much is obvious, and the chance to stop their opponents’ unbeaten run will add fuel to the fire. St Patrick’s Day weekend, let’s have Ireland +5 at evens.
