Bet of the day: David Goffin defeats Dominic Thiem at Australian Open
Jamie Clark, Sports Editor | January 21, 2016
Coral’s bet of the day
- Goffin seeded four places higher than Thiem
- Belgium holds 4-2 head-to-head advantage
- Two hard court meetings have gone to Goffin
Goffin great value to win
Coral punters can get awesome odds of 11/8 for David Goffin to win his Australian Open men’s singles third round encounter with Dominic Thiem.
The Belgian is seeded 15th in Melbourne and should climb up from 16 in the ATP world rankings because of Kevin Anderson’s early exit from the first Grand Slam of 2016.
Austrian opponent Thiem started this year just inside the men’s tour top 20, though is yet to make much of an impressive in tennis majors.
History and surface favours Belgian
Goffin, who has come through his first two matches at the 2016 Australian Open in four sets, is 4-2 up on previous meetings with Thiem all of which have come within the last two years.
Only one loss, and that on clay, counts against Goffin, as his other defeat came via forfeit when he was forced to retire handing Thiem victory in Marseille less than 12 months ago.
With two victories in the other hard court meetings under his belt, Goffin is more of a banker bet than a gamble.
Davis Cup run stands Goffin in good stead
Although Belgium ultimately finished as runners-up to Great Britain in last year’s Davis Cup team event, Goffin guided his country all the way to the final.
Helping to knock out then-defending champions Switzerland and later Argentina, both on hard surfaces, Goffin’s game has improved remarkably of later.
This is evidenced by the fact he’s had his best runs at Wimbledon and the US Open last season, and the same can already be said for his Melbourne performance here.
Considering all this Thiem looks like a false favourite, leaving Goffin well worth a wager at 11/8 to take his place in the Australian Open round of 16.
